Useful app, more features needed
Quia offers students an additional platform to learn vocabulary in any subject. There are hundreds of already-created vocabulary sets, which you can "borrow" and add to your own. Students and teachers can also create their own flashcard sets, making it a truly customized experience.
Saves prep time
prepida is a great study tool. You create flashcards that can be accessed by anyone online. There are a variety of ways to study using prepida: tests, games, and flash cards. It's great for all levels of learners because of the diversity. ELL students can have the cards read to them and can select the language to have the cards shown to them. This site challenges students to learn the material by ranking them if they choose to sign in and by giving them encouraging comments to improve. The downside of this site is that it is extremely strict. What I mean is that the student must type the answer exactly or it does not recognize it as correct. This can be frustrating to the students if they make a minor mistake. Also, it generates test questions that do not always make sense. For example, if the question asks "which branch of government makes laws?", the answer choices may be "veto, Legislative Branch, and 2/3." Also, it really focuses on memorization rather than adding any depth of knowledge. When making flash card sets, you really have to phrase them carefully knowing the limitations of this product. Finally, you are really limited to the type of information you can review using this site. It is difficult to add in depth, critical thinking questions using this format.
Study anywhere with ease
If you have ever made flash cards, or asked a friend to help you study for a vocabulary test, you will find the benefit in prepida. This free tool allows teachers and students to sign up for a free account to create their own flash cards by typing the words and their definitions into the site. (accounts are not needed to use a set — only to create one) Thanks to prepida, I stopped having students copy vocabulary from the board. I can print out the vocabulary set or have the students, but most of the time I have the students jump right into the site and learn the vocabulary with the site. Using prepida, students can then see what their weaknesses are and put more time to improve those words or skills, whether it be spelling, matching, etc. I love that each student can work independently and review the material in several ways, rather than use a paper study guide that presents the information in one way. For offline learning, a vocabulary list, flash cards and a test can be printed right from the website! prepida could be improved by allowing teachers to set up student accounts, like many of the other educational tools do, so they can track their students from the site and give direction to the students who need reinforcement.
Helpful digital memory tool
prepida would work for any grade level for practice and repetition.
Fun and focused studying
The uses for prepida in and out of the classroom are endless. Yes, it uses the basic concept of creating and using flashcards; however, it does it in a sneaky way that students find less boring than creating physical flashcards. There will always be facts to learn. Learning facts is at the base of the pyramid of learning. Does prepida promote higher levels of thinking? Probably not (though, if used creatively it certainly can). Does it provide a base for higher thinking? Most definitely.
Changed how I teach vocab
prepida has a team of people actively working to improve their product for teacher/student use. Over the course of the 2013-14 school year they have made meaningful updates to their site and how it can be used, making it a more powerful teaching/learning tool. Like any tool, an individual can use it poorly or well but that does not take away from the potential and quality of what prepida has going right now.
Weekly practice for students
If you can review, edit and manage the quality of flashcard content well, students can be assigned different sets of material to prepare for review. Great for basic rote memorization work with key vocabulary.
Creative teaching companion
prepida serves to support general review needs. This flashcard site allows teachers to create and share customized flashcards specific to the content they are teaching. As an added bonus, prepida makes games out of your flashcard content allowing students to review and play! prepida sets are shareable by URL and can be placed on teacher websites and can be embedded as well. Providing students with your username allows them to search for your account and practice your prepida sets.
Flashcards on the go
This is great for vocabulary practice.
Great for quick study
I create a list of vocabulary words and definitions for every section of notes. I give my students the url for prepida and they go on to the website to review vocabulary.
